St. Louis Tourism Looking Good For Summer Of Fun

St. Louis held its first ever U.S. Travel and Tourism Rally at Kiener Plaza Wednesday. The event is part of National Tourism Week and an opportunity to promote St. Louis and attractions like the Gateway Arch. Leisure and business travelers contribute more than $4 billion to the local economy. City leaders say even in these tough times, visiting St. Louis is one of the best deals around.

From the Cardinals to the Gateway Arch, St. Louis has it all and it doesn't cost much to have a ball in the Gateway City.

Al Sedlacekm, with the St. Louis Area Hotel Association says simply, "We are affordable. We are a great value."

A great value that's worth talking about. That's one reason the St. Louis Convention and Visitors Commission is using cultural and romantic ads to promote the city across the country.

With the summer travel season upon us, everyone expects tourists will be keeping close tabs on their budgets during this sluggish economy.

Bob O'Loughlin, with the St. Louis Convention & Visitors Commission, explains, "One thing is to make people aware of us, especially in these tough economic times where people are worried about maybe being laid off. We want to make people aware this is an affordable place."

It's a place that offers free attractions such as the St. Louis Zoo, St. Louis Science Center and Anhueser-Busch tours. Perhaps that explains why more than 22 million tourists visit St. Louis for business and vacation every year and predictions for this summer look great.

Tourism is up a little, but meetings and conventions are down. Officials expect the All Star game to bring in good numbers.

That's good news for St. Louis, a city that appears to be doing better than most in this harsh climate.

St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay says, "Overall, the economy is hitting cities all over America not just ours, but I think we're in a real good position. We're poised in a good way to be resilient through this economy."

Another reason city leaders are optimistic about tourism in St. Louis this summer? The city is conveniently located to other major cities and people can drive here.
