Halloween fun for whole family in St. Louis

Not-So-Haunted House in St. Louis
St. Louis has many Halloween activities for the kids but one of the best is the Not-So-Haunted House at the Magic House. Every kid gets their own autograph book, and as they trick or treat through the house, they can collect signatures from many of their favorite storybook characters. This year's characters include favorites from Peter Pan, Harry Potter and The Wizard of Oz. There is also a Haunted Trail for the older kids.
October 23 - 25 & October 30 - November 1, 2009 at Kirkwood

Boo at the Zoo
Another great Halloween event for children is Boo at the Zoo Nights. The Zoo is open late, starting October 16, for kid-friendly Halloween fun. Then, there's the Zoo's "Spooky Saturday" party on October 24, where children of all ages can trick-or-treat along the Zoo's Pumpkin Trail and join in a costume parade.
October 16 - 30, 2009 at Forest Park

Pumpkin Jamboree at Eckert's
Find perfect pumpkins at Eckert's Orchards. Their pumpkin patch has any size pumpkin you'd want, including ones that weigh up to 150 pounds. During weekends in October, Eckert's is hosting its Jumpin' Pumpkin Jamboree with wagon rides, live music, pony rides, a petting farm, funnel cakes and more. The Millstadt location also offers Haunted Hayrides through the orchard each Friday and Saturday in October.
Weekends in October, 2009 at Belleville, Millstadt & Grafton

Great Godfrey Maze
Wandering around a cornfield after dark can be a little scary, but it's pure fun at the Great Godfrey Maze. The giant maze is cut into seven acres of cornfield. This year, the maze trails are in the shape of a knight on a horse with a castle in the background. The maze is open during the day, but bring a flashlight and try the Haunted Maze at night. The Haunted Maze is open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays starting October 9.

St. Louis Tourism Looking Good For Summer Of Fun

St. Louis held its first ever U.S. Travel and Tourism Rally at Kiener Plaza Wednesday. The event is part of National Tourism Week and an opportunity to promote St. Louis and attractions like the Gateway Arch. Leisure and business travelers contribute more than $4 billion to the local economy. City leaders say even in these tough times, visiting St. Louis is one of the best deals around.

From the Cardinals to the Gateway Arch, St. Louis has it all and it doesn't cost much to have a ball in the Gateway City.

Al Sedlacekm, with the St. Louis Area Hotel Association says simply, "We are affordable. We are a great value."

A great value that's worth talking about. That's one reason the St. Louis Convention and Visitors Commission is using cultural and romantic ads to promote the city across the country.

With the summer travel season upon us, everyone expects tourists will be keeping close tabs on their budgets during this sluggish economy.

Bob O'Loughlin, with the St. Louis Convention & Visitors Commission, explains, "One thing is to make people aware of us, especially in these tough economic times where people are worried about maybe being laid off. We want to make people aware this is an affordable place."

It's a place that offers free attractions such as the St. Louis Zoo, St. Louis Science Center and Anhueser-Busch tours. Perhaps that explains why more than 22 million tourists visit St. Louis for business and vacation every year and predictions for this summer look great.

Tourism is up a little, but meetings and conventions are down. Officials expect the All Star game to bring in good numbers.

That's good news for St. Louis, a city that appears to be doing better than most in this harsh climate.

St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay says, "Overall, the economy is hitting cities all over America not just ours, but I think we're in a real good position. We're poised in a good way to be resilient through this economy."

Another reason city leaders are optimistic about tourism in St. Louis this summer? The city is conveniently located to other major cities and people can drive here.

Charles Russell

I am sure most of the readers do not know about Charles Russell. Let me tell you.

Charles Russell (1864-1926) was a famous artist known for his paintings, drawings, and sculptures. And you must be wondering why I am writing about him in this blog spot....the reason is this famous artist was born in St. Louis, Missouri.

Charles always dreamed of being a cowboy. In 1880, at the age of 16 he began sketching and at the same age he left for Montana in order to fulfill his dreams. He spent a decade working as a ranch hand and cowboy. In his spare time he sketched what he saw. At nineteen, Russell completed his earliest watercolor. Russell continued to paint, sketch, and sculpt scenes of the west at a time when few others were focused on the subject. Many of his works reflect the culture of Native Americans. After 1919, he spent winters in California, where a strong following developed among the movie colony.

Charles painted and sculpted images of the western frontier as he witnessed them. His popular paintings, watercolors, and sketches and are widely recognized as capturing the spirit of the vanished and romantic era of American history, documenting the old west and the daily life of fur traders, cowboys, and Native Americans. Over 30 pieces of Russell's art and the work of other western artists, including O.C. Seltzer and Edward Borein, will be on view at the Frye Art Museum beginning November 21, 1998. The exhibition is named "Saga of the West: Selections from the Charles M. Russell Museum" and features selections from the C. M. Russell Museum.

Actors William S. Hart, Douglas Fairbanks, and Will Rogers were avid collectors of Russell art. By the time of his death, the artist had produced over 4,000 works of art, including his popular bronze sculptures. Take a look at Russell's art.

Celebrate this 2009 Horseradish Festival with Quality Inn Aiport St. Louis, Missouri

What is Horseradish?
Horseradish is a perennial plant from the mustard family, native to southeastern Europe and western Asia, but popular around the world today. It grows up to 5 feet tall and is mainly cultivated for its large white, tapered root.
The root is harvested in the spring and fall and sold in 1200-pound pallets to processors who grate the root releasing the volatile oils that distinguish horseradish from all other flavors. The ground horseradish is then mixed with distilled vinegar to stabilize the "heat."
In the United States, an estimated 24 million pounds of horseradish roots are ground and processed annually to produce approximately 6 million gallons of prepared horseradish.

What is Horseradish Festival?
Each May, horseradish is feted at the International Horseradish Festival in Collinsville, Illinois. Events include a root toss, a horseradish-eating contest and a horseradish recipe contest. Begun in 1988, the festival was designed to create national awareness for the herb and the area where most of the world’s supply is grown, according to festival organizers. Collinsville and the surrounding area is part of what is known as the American bottoms, a Mississippi river basin area adjacent to St. Louis. Carved-out by the glaciers from the ice age, the soil is rich in potash, a nutrient on which the horseradish thrives. The area grows 60 percent of the world’s supply.
The festival will have tons of fun, food, music and obviously..delicious and spicy Horseradish.
